Paignton is a delightful seaside town on the southern part of England in Devon. Referred to as the English Riviera, this area of South Devon has a warm micro-climate and is home to gorgeous beaches and amazing coastline. Paignton is a favorite for many with its mix of traditional seaside fun, family-friendly attractions, and beautiful surroundings that attract visitors young or old. Here’s a list of some of the best things to do in Paignton and its surroundings:
- Paignton Beach: Lots of lovely beach and Victorian-styled seafront. Great for sunbathing, swimming, or just enjoying the beach breeze.
What to do: Try out some paddleboarding, pedalos, or kayaking. There is room for building sandcastles and a shallow, safe area to paddle, making it great also for families. - Paignton Pier: Paignton has a lovely Victorian pier leading out into the sea with stunning views.
Things to do: Attractions on the pier include amusement arcades, traditional funfair rides, food stalls, and shops. Perfect for some good old-fashioned days by the sea. - Paignton Zoo: One of the top family days out in South Devon, where more than 2,000 creatures roam across several acres of lush gardens and greenery.
Top attractions: The zoo houses an array of animals including big cats, primates, reptiles, and birds. There are also several play areas for children and talks/shows throughout the day. - Goodrington Sands: South of Paignton, Goodrington Sands is another lovely beach with golden sands and calm waters.
Activities: Water sports aplenty—the beach is a prime spot for kayaking and paddleboarding. There is also a huge park with a boating lake, splash park, and crazy golf. - Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway: This heritage railway makes for a delightful journey along the coast and through the countryside that lies between Paignton and Dartmouth.
Experience: The steam train ride offers truly beautiful views of the coast and River Dart, plus a good dollop of vintage train travel nostalgia. - Cockington Country Park: Located just a short drive from Paignton, Cockington Country Park is an idyllic village that boasts 450 acres of stunning parkland.
Top tips: Get lost in the historic village, thatched cottage-covered craft studios, and cute tea rooms. The park is also home to beautiful walking paths, a walled garden, and a lakefront area. - Splashdown Quaywest: Located on Goodrington Sands, Splashdown is the UK’s biggest outdoor waterpark with eight different flume rides.
Things to do: The park is packed out with water slides and flumes that keep families entertained for hours on end or appeal more strongly to thrill-seekers. - Kents Cavern: Just down the coast in Torquay is Kents Cavern, known to be one of the most significant prehistoric cave sites in Europe.
What to do: Take a tour of the caves and learn about their history and who lived in them, which included both people (as old as 15,000 years) and animals. The caves are also a cool retreat from the summer heat. - Dartmoor National Park: A little further away, but if you like to hike, look at wildlife, and enjoy the great outdoors, then it is worth a visit.
Things to do: Experience the rolling moorland, stone tors, and ancient woodlands. In addition to the equally charming Dartmoor Villages, there are also rich historic landmarks and neat outdoor activities. - Nearby Dining Out and Shopping:
Eating: Paignton has a wealth of high-quality places to eat—from traditional fish and chips by the sea to award-winning seafood restaurants with local meats & vegetables, or go for tea in Devon cream!
Shopping: The town has a plethora of shops and boutiques, especially down by the harbor or in its “sunken whale” center two blocks off Front Street. Make sure you pick up some delicious Devon fudge or souvenirs. - Brixham: Another short hop from Paignton, conveniently connected by ferry (or a slightly longer bus ride), this pretty fishing town with its working harbor presents an authentic experience for seafood fans.
Things to do: Visit the harbor; walk out on a jetty for close-up views of local seals and sea lions, then dine harborside at one of many seafood establishments. - Torquay: Torquay is a few miles away from Paignton and situated along the coastal stretch of South Devon known as the English Riviera, with local attractions including Living Coasts (a marine zoo), the popular Torre Abbey, and plenty more at its nearby museum.
Things to do: Stroll over the palm-filled promenade, check out the historical Abbey, or go on a coastal boat trip.
Paignton and its surrounding areas are enchanting places that offer natural beauty, traditional seaside fun, and a wide range of activities and attractions. Whether you’re into history, wildlife, or just enjoying the beach, Paignton has something for everyone.
