East Ayrshire is Burns country in the most direct sense — it was in Mauchline that Robert Burns lived for several years, married Jean Armour, and fathered most of his children, and it was in Kilmarnock that his first collection was published in 1786. Loch Doon in the south of the county is a reservoir surrounded by moorland, and Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock is a surprisingly good green space for a town this size.
