Most motorhomers reach the island via the CalMac ferry from Kennacraig on the A83 — the crossing takes around two hours and lands at either Port Ellen in the south or Port Askaig in the northeast. The island’s road network is manageable for motorhomes, running between its scattered villages across an open, peat-bog and farmland landscape with Atlantic coastline on most sides. Islay is well known for its whisky distilleries — there are several operational ones — and for significant populations of overwintering geese and other birdlife, particularly around the RSPB reserve at Loch Gruinart.
