Buxton sits at around 1,000 feet above sea level in the Peak District National Park — one of the highest market towns in England. It’s in north Derbyshire, well-placed on the A6 which runs through the town connecting Manchester to the north and Matlock and the Midlands to the south. The A515 heads south towards Ashbourne. The town itself has a distinctive Georgian character, centred on the Crescent and the Pavilion Gardens, with the limestone plateau of the White Peak all around it.
